Down Under Championship Enhances Broadcast Coverage Through Remote Production

Key Points:

  • DoubleTake Sports produces advanced world feed for the elite Down Under Championship.
  • Broadcast was continual for 14 hours of each day of the competition.
  • Produced entirely remote from our studios in Brisbane.

Last week our team travelled to Wollongong to produce the multi-day, multi-sport broadcast of the Down Under Championship, a CrossFit licensed event. This 3-day event, bringing together the fittest people on the planet, was broadcast globally on YouTube to a live audience of over 210,000 people.

Thanks to our innovative remote broadcasting workflows, we broadcast the event with only 5 crew onsite in Wollongong, with the rest of our extensive production team for this major event based in Brisbane. This workflow enabled us to broadcast continually for 14 hours straight on each day of the competition, while also ensuring that crews were well rested, travel minimised, and the highest quality product provided for the client.

From Wollongong, NSW, the DoubleTake Sports broadcast saw three full days of advanced coverage that featured micro/beauty cameras, PTZ cameras operated the remote production center, live coverage from drones/UAV for external events, in-venue commentary, integration with the in-venue center-hung video boards and AV, custom graphics, and post-event hostings in a dedicated interview set for broadcast and spectators at the venue.

This advanced production was planned and delivered in less than two months, and saw just five production crew at the venue, with the remote production crew delivering the event coverage from 1000km away.

In addition to the events of the competition, we also produced a 30-minute end of day panel show, with talent onsite in Wollongong, and our production team based in Brisbane. This level of coverage, at this price point, would not have been possible without the innovative remote broadcasting technology that we have developed.
